Title of the Project: “AGOULINITSA LAKE” RESTITUTION

Coordinator: European Institute of Law, Science and Technology

Date of Commencement: Oct. 7, 2007

Purpose

This project regards the restitution of a part of a pre-existing, currently dried, natural lake in its prior natural condition by creation of an artificial lake that belongs at the Municipality of Volaka in the Ilias Prefecture, Southwest Peloponnesus, Greece. The Creation of an artificial lake (Reservoir) is not about construction of a dam, but by restitution of a pre-existing lake by other, alternative, environmentally friendly means.

Rational of the Project

The reconstruction of the lake aims among others:

  • At the creation of a natural reservoir for drinkable water, in order to be able to provide water to the inhabitants of the region during the warm summer months were drinkable water is scarce (provide data)
  • At the creation of a natural reserve for water for agricultural uses and for forestry uses (irrigation).
  • At the mitigation of the desertification phenomenon of the region, with is likely to be promoted especially after the recent wild fires in the neighboring forests and agricultural areas.
  • At the adaptation to the climate change impacts (e.g. drinkable and arable water that will be scarce in the future due to the raise in temperature, drop of the daily air temperature)
  • The construction of a lake serves the most natural and cost-benefit way of watering (water collection) by collecting the rain water.
