Dionysia-Theodora Avgerinopoulou

Ms. Avgerinopoulou is co-founder and the President of the EILST since 2004. She serves as the overall coordinator of all the sectors of the EILST. She specializes in legal and policy aspects of environmental protection, including climate change, international organizations and transatlantic cooperation in scientific and technologal issues.


Ms. Avgerinopoulou is serving as a Member of the Hellenic Parliament "at large" (State Deputy) as of October 4, 2009. Dionysia is also an international lawer. She holds law degrees from the Faculty of Law of the Kapodestrian University in Athens, Greece and the Georgetown Law Center, Washington, D.C., U.S.A. and is currenlty a doctoral candidate at Columbia University School of Law, New York, N.Y., U.S.A. She specializes in Environmental Law, including Climate Change Law, International Law, European Law and Alternative Dispute Settlement (Mediation, Conciliation and Arbitration.)

She has previously worked, among others, at the Legal Service of the European Commission in Brussels, the European Commission Delegation to the United Nations and the Center on Environmental and Land Use Law of the New York University School of Law in New York, the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy in New Haven, and the International and Foreign Law Institute in Athens. She runs her law office in Athens, Greece. She is the author of several articles and has presented her work on several international conferences. She speaks Greek, English, French and German.


Dionysia puts a great value on the pro bono aspect of the work of the EILST and, among others, has pro bono led an initiative for an environmental crisis management and reconstruction plan for a part of the devastated areas on Peloponnese, Greece, after the wild fires of August 2007. Dionysia has also taken a series of initiatives for international institution building, such as for the establishment of a Climate Change Center for the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Her work has been acknowledged by a series of awards, honours and distinctions.
