Wildfires and Climate Change in the Euro-Mediterranean Countries

Viewing the recent wild fires totaling to extensive forest destruction in the South European countries, due, among others, to environmental degradation and climate change phenomenon, the European Institute of Law, Science and Technology (EILST) developed a pro bono, systemic, multilayered project and offered assistance to the Municipality of Zacharo, Ilias, Greece, since forest destruction due to wild fires has been the fiercest there.

Available at: http://scholarworks.umass.edu/theses/254/ The above master's thesis (submitted at the University of Massachusetts Amherst) uses statistical methodology to analyze the factors that contributed to the spread of the wildfires of August 2007 in the Greek state of Elia. Part of the research for the thesis was conducted under the auspices of EILST".


“AGOULINITSA LAKE” Restitution Project

This project relates to research relating with possible restitution of a part of a pre-existing, currently dried, natural lake in its prior natural condition by creation of an artificial lake that belongs to the Municipality of Volaka in the Ilias Prefecture, Southwest Peloponnesus, Greece.


Brain Drain Project

Preliminary research on the migration of Greek Medical Doctors to the UK. Numbers, characteristics, trends, experience of the integration process and intention to repatriate. A cross-sectional population-based survey in cooperation with the HBA-USA and the Centre International de Recherches Helléniques.


Transaltantic Platform - Internships

This projects aims to offer opportunities for work experience and research to young scholars from the U.S. to Europe and vice versa.


Establishent of an International Climate Change Center for the Mediterranean and the Middle East

The Climate Change Program of the EILST initiates the establishment of the International Climate Change Center for the Mediterranean and the Middle East in order to raise awareness, conduct research and provide solutions for adaptation to the climate change impacts on the region of the Mediterranean and the Middle East, regions that are considered to be vulnerable to climate change. The EILST is currently in the process of contacting and consulting with major universities and research centers abroad, the International Panel of Climate Change, as well as the European Commission and Members of the European Parliament in order the Climate Change Center to gather the best expertise possible and to serve as a clearing house for relevant information for the region.


GSPs Re-design for Sustainable Development

Developing Countries and Generalized System of Preferences: a dubious relationship. The EILST proposes new ways for the re-design and re-orientation of a traditionally trade instrument, the Generalized System of Preferences schemes, for the promotion of sustainable development and the developmental needs of Developing Countries. The Project was completed in 2006 and ended up with a publication: "Implementation and Enforcement of Multilateral Environmental Agreements - The New EC Generalized System of Preferences Scheme" available at http://www.eurilst.org/main/index.php/Publications


Technology-Enforcing Legislation - Regulation of the Impacts of International Aviation on Climate Change

This project is ongoing. The results of the Project are to be publiced soon.
